THE DREAM MACHINES…
IMAGINATION AND THE INSTINCT TOWARDS CREATING A NEW DIMENSION BRINGS OUT INVENTIONS…..
A human brain uses only around 5% of potential in a lifetime. George T. Luikhan ,a student of Manipal Dental College who has recently completed his dental internship went bit beyond the conventional method of pursuing knowledge.
Instead of restricting himself only to the field of his specialization dentistry he has made commendable achievement in designing machines.
“Performance in examination is not a matter .My hands are involved and I get the feeling of having spent time and skill on something practical rather than just accumulating bookish knowledge” says George.
Having watched boats tossing up and down on water many a times ,George started to research upon the very basic principles of floating. He found out that the amount of water the boat displaces is proportional to the stability to the boat. Keeping this in consideration he designed the boat.
“It is almost like a kayak and can float safely bearing weight of 85 kilograms” says George.
To test whether the boat can support the theoretical calculations George and his friends have tried the boat on water.
“I took it to an industrial area, a place which was not very deep to experience how my boat floats” says George. “To check the stability I leaned over and over until the boat toppled” adds George.
It took him a month’s time to accomplish this project successfully.
His latest invention is his dream come true and the fruit of his hard work an all terrain vehicle. In the words of George it is the Labor Of Love. “It is the combination of a sports car and a sports utility vehicle.” says George.
George’s tireless efforts for over three years has yielded in this grand success. The car is now ready and George has successfully test droved it on the high ways and on rough terrains..
“George brings skills and knowledge over the years at many different jobs to the task at hand . His try again policy keeps him going”. says his friend Praveen Joseph a student of Kasturba Medical College,Manipal.
“The car climbs on rocks exactly like a lizard” say the spectators who watch him performing stunts near the Manipal lake.
“The whole outcome is the result of serious research and their proper implementation” says George. “It is built for performance” he adds.
The chassis of the car is built of Tata MS mild steel pipes. Around twenty such pipes make up the chassis of the car. George had a tough time to look for a place where he could get the pipes bent the way he wanted.
“Finally I found a place near MGM college where they could bend AR 2 the pipes using hydraulic benders.” says George.
“People there could not understand the drawings that I had made on the paper which was drawn to a scale .I had to draw the picture of the pipes with actual measurement on the ground with a piece of chalk” adds George.
The car is a creative collage of elements from various other vehicles.
Maruti 800 engine makes up the basic drive train although cheap yet up to date.
To provide the car with a better shock absorbing capacity in order to sustain the ups and downs in rough roads George uses the shock absorbers of a heavy truck.
“ This gives the car a good wheel travel that exceeds the speed cars by several factors” says George.
The wrack and pinion steering is that of a Tata Indica. The car uses a four wheel disk brake system along with four wheel independent suspension system.
Presently the high way speed of the car is some where around 80 kilometer per hour but with a better Honda Type R1800cc engine the car can go really fast .
“It is not the speed rather it is the ability of the car to perform on any terrain is what I have focused on” says George.
Every effort has been made to make the car perfect from all orientation. Technically the car is built on strong basis of construction as well as other aspects of making it more attractive has not been left untouched.
George being a music lover himself has equipped the car with a musical alarm system. The car starts screaming “Do not bother me” on any illegal entry.
George is an American but has spent many years of his life in India. “It would not have been possible for me to work on the car project back in United States because the expenditure there would have been much higher than it is here in India.” Says George
He also threw some light on his upcoming project. He has thought upon designing an aircraft which would be a combination of the best of flying features of a vertical take off and a fixed wing air aircraft incorporated in it.
This would reduce the expense of flying per hour to a great deal assuring more safety while flying.
Ideas that are innovative, creative and new maintain the flow of development in this fast prospering global arena.
Being creative out of the box is what that has made George successful.
